Towering above the entrance stand magnificent Ponderosa Pines, the gentle giants of the forest. Long before the first miniature train rolled down the tracks, these stately trees were already standing watch over the mountain.

Every adventure at Train Mountain begins beneath their branches.

Ponderosa Pines stay green through every season, from snowy winters to warm summer afternoons.

Ponderosa Pines commonly grow 100 to 150 feet tall, although some become even taller.

Their trunks can grow three to five feet across, making them true giants of the forest.

Even on the calmest summer day, their tiny round leaves seem to dance, shimmer, and sparkle in the sunlight. It's almost as if the trees are waving hello to everyone who passes by.

Here's something amazing...

A whole grove of Aspen trees may actually be one single living organism!

Hidden beneath the ground is one enormous root system. New trees sprout from those roots, so what looks like hundreds of individual trees may actually be one giant family sharing the same underground home.

In late spring, this beautiful shrub becomes covered with fluffy white blossoms that brighten the mountainside like freshly fallen snow.

Snowbrush usually blooms from May through June, filling the air with its sweet fragrance and attracting busy pollinators from all around the forest.

📏 How Big Will I Be?

Most Snowbrush shrubs grow 4 to 10 feet tall, although some can become even larger. Their glossy evergreen leaves stay green all year long.

Snowbrush is one of nature's amazing forest helpers.

Its roots have tiny partners—special bacteria—that gather nitrogen from the air and return it to the soil as natural plant food. That helps nearby trees, wildflowers, and other plants grow strong and healthy.

These little jewels brighten the mountain in midsummer and have been enjoyed by wildlife—and people—for generations.

Just remember... they're much tarter than they look!

Wild Red Currants bloom with delicate flowers in spring, and by July, the bright red berries are ready to harvest.

The berries don't stay on the bushes for long, though. Birds and other hungry woodland visitors are usually the first to arrive!

Dead trees may not look very exciting at first glance, but they're some of the busiest places in the forest. Standing dead trees, called snags, and fallen logs provide food, shelter, and homes for countless living things. If you stop for a moment and look closely, you'll discover that these old trees are anything but lifeless.

What You'll Discover

Dead trees become neighborhoods for wildlife.

Woodpeckers drill nesting holes into soft wood. Chickadees, bluebirds, nuthatches, flying squirrels, and other animals often move into those empty homes after the woodpeckers leave. Beneath the bark, beetles, ants, and other insects begin breaking down the wood, creating food for birds and small mammals.

As the years pass, mosses, lichens, fungi, and tiny plants slowly reclaim the tree, returning its nutrients to the forest floor where new life can begin.

A single dead tree can support hundreds of different species of insects, birds, mammals, fungi, and microorganisms during the many years it slowly returns to the earth.

Even after a tree falls, it continues helping the forest by holding moisture, protecting young seedlings, and enriching the soil as it slowly decomposes.

Long before most of the wildflowers awaken, Daffodil Hill bursts into bloom with thousands of cheerful yellow blossoms. After a long winter, these sunny flowers are often the first sign that spring has arrived at Train Mountain.

Each year, visitors eagerly watch for the first daffodils to open. As more and more blossoms appear, the hillside transforms into a sea of gold that has become one of the mountain's most beloved spring traditions.

Just down the trail sits the charming Daffodil Stables, where miniature horses, chickens, and other farm animals welcome visitors to one of the most photographed spots on the railroad. Together, the flowers and stables create a place that feels as though it has stepped right out of a storybook.

Nature's Secrets

Unlike many wildflowers that grow from seeds each year, daffodils grow from bulbs hidden safely beneath the soil. Those bulbs store energy all winter long, allowing the flowers to bloom quickly when the days begin to warm.

If left undisturbed, a patch of daffodils can continue blooming for decades, with each bulb slowly multiplying to create even larger displays over time.

Wildlife Value

Although deer and squirrels usually leave daffodils alone because the bulbs and leaves are naturally toxic, the flowers provide an early source of nectar for awakening bees and other pollinators.

This beautifully maintained corner of Train Mountain reflects the love, care, and dedication of the volunteers who make the railroad such a special place. The charming chickens, turkeys, horses, and the delightful Daffodil Stables were lovingly created to add fun, whimsy, and a touch of storybook magic for visitors of all ages.

Spring is a busy time for the volunteers, too. Across Train Mountain, crews inspect and repair the railroad after the long winter. Leaves, pinecones, and fallen branches are cleared from the tracks, bridges are checked, and stations begin to come alive again. Before long, the whistle of the first train of the season echoes through the forest, announcing that another year of adventures has begun.

Summer

By midsummer, the meadow is alive with color. Lupines, Indian Paintbrush, Yarrow, Sulphur Buckwheat, and countless other wildflowers sway gently in the breeze. Butterflies dance from bloom to bloom, dragonflies patrol the skies, and hummingbirds dart among the blossoms. Every walk reveals something new.

Summer is the busiest season at Train Mountain. Families, school groups, scout troops, summer camps, clubs, and visitors from around the world come to ride the trains and explore the forest. Some are seeing miniature railroads for the very first time, while others return year after year to enjoy old friends and make new memories.

Autumn

As the days grow shorter, the meadow slowly changes once again. Wildflowers give way to golden grasses, seed heads provide food for birds, and Quaking Aspens shimmer with brilliant shades of gold. Cooler mornings and crisp mountain air remind visitors that another season is arriving.

Autumn may be the mountain's most colorful season. Trains wind through forests glowing with shades of gold, orange, and crimson, while crisp mountain air and quieter trails make every ride feel a little more peaceful. Wildlife busily prepares for winter, and visitors often discover that this is one of the best times of year to simply slow down and enjoy the beauty all around them.

Winter brings a quieter kind of beauty. Snow blankets the meadow, animal tracks tell silent stories, and many plants patiently rest beneath the snow, gathering strength for another spring. Although the meadow may appear asleep, life continues just beneath the surface.
